This special initiative is aimed at raising awareness about the various eye diseases and disorders that women are at a higher risk of developing, such as ocular manifestations of autoimmune diseases, dry eye, low vision, thyroid eye diseases, and refractive errors. Dr. Archana S, Regional Head- Clinical Services, Dr. Agarwals Eye Hospital, stated that “Biological sex differences affect ocular structure, gene expression, and other functions of the eye that influence eye health. Hence, it is important for women to undergo regular eye checkups to detect any eye disease or disorder at an early stage.” Dr. Archana S also added, “About 80% of those affected by autoimmune issues are women. Eye inflammation is one of the many possible effects of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, psoriasis, Reiter’s syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, and uveitis. Graves’ disease, an autoimmune disorder, which results in overproduction of the thyroid hormone affects more women than men. Thyroid eye diseases affect 16 in 100,000 women, while only 3 in the male population of equal size.” Dr. Agarwals Eye Hospital has made special arrangements for screening and diagnosing such eye diseases and disorders that women are more susceptible to. The hospital’s month-long awareness campaign aims to educate women about the risks of eye diseases that arise from factors exclusive to them, such as hormonal surges during pregnancy and menopause, and susceptibility to autoimmune diseases. Women can register for a free eye checkup by contacting 080-48193435. This is an excellent opportunity for women to take care of their eye health and receive expert advice from experienced eye care professionals.
Apollo partners with LifeSigns to donate 1000 remote patient monitoring patches to support Turkey after the disaster
The recent catastrophic disaster in Turkey has left tens of thousands of people dead and thousands more injured. While the rescue phase is complete, the recovery and rehabilitation phase is just beginning. Many hospitals have been demolished and are not functional, and doctors, nurses, and staff have been stretched thin. To support the country during this critical time, Apollo Hospitals and LifeSigns have partnered to donate 1000 remote patient monitoring patches. These patches can be used in settings where patients need close vital signs monitoring, including cardiac rhythm. They allow doctors to reliably monitor a patient’s heart rate, ECG rhythm, respiratory rate, temperature, and position, and can also be used to connect to oxygen saturation monitoring devices. This will free up critical care beds for the sickest patients, and those who need care outside of hospitals or in the field can use the patches. Timely monitoring of vital signs is essential to avoid further loss of life, especially when patients may not have access to their usual care and medications, and are dealing with immense stress from their losses. Dr Sai Praveen Haranath from Apollo Hospitals stated, “Apollo Hospitals stands ready to assist Turkey in this hour of need to help with medical assistance and guidance from our entire critical care and sub-specialist teams, who can help with monitoring these patients.” The Founder & Director of Life signs, Mr Hari Subramaniam, who donated the patches, understands the critical need for such a device, stating, “As a company, we have always believed that vital signs need to be monitored anywhere, anytime, and our devices allow doctors to make important decisions for their patients to prevent harm and encourage healing.” The Turkish Medical Association Central Council General Secretary Prof. Vedat Bulut Said, “We are thankful for humanitarian health aid and the solidarity of Apollo Hospital Group on behalf of the Turkish Medical Association. All efforts to help the earthquake victims are invaluable. Adana Medical Chamber is now the logistic centre in the disaster zone, and all medical supplies are distributed from Adana to other cities. In particular, four cities were damaged badly, and even the buildings of medical chambers collapsed in these cities.” Dr Selahattin Menteş, Radiation Oncology Specialist, and President of Adana Medical Chamber said “We thank you for the international solidarity shown in the earthquake that affected a total of 11 provinces, including 15 million people.” This whole endeavour was made possible through an international network of volunteers spanning many countries and required extreme coordination and cooperation from busy doctors in Turkey who were already dealing with multiple issues related to the crisis. We are hopeful that this donation of devices and expertise will help build a medical bridge between these two great countries and alleviate suffering. About Apollo Apollo revolutionized healthcare when Dr Prathap Reddy opened the first hospital in Chennai in 1983. Today Apollo is the world’s largest vertically integrated healthcare platform with over 10,000 beds across 71 hospitals, 5,000 pharmacies and over 200 clinics and diagnostic centers as well as 150 telemedicine centers. It is the world’s leading cardiac center with over 160,000 surgeries and the world’s largest private cancer care provider. Apollo continues to invest in research to bring the most cutting-edge technologies, equipment and treatment protocols to ensure patients have the best available care in the world. First time in Tamil Nadu, Meenakshi Mission Hospital performed Double- Barrel STA-MCA Bypass Surgery
First time in Tamil Nadu, Neurosurgery team at Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre (MMHRC) performed a complex brain surgery called “Double-Barrel STA-MCA Bypass Surgery” to save a 50 years old woman with Complex Cerebral Aneurysm. The patient was brought with history of headache, aphasia, loss of vision in the right eye and weakness in the left side limbs. She was apparently normal 1 month back and symptoms progressed rapidly. Initially she was treated in her native place, then referred here for further management. MRI brain and Digital Subtraction Angiography was done which showed right Giant thrombosed supraclinoid aneurysm with acute infarct seen in right basal ganglia. Neurosurgical team and Neuroanesthetisa team had a complete discussion with family members regarding nature of the disease and line of management along with pros and cons of the surgical procedure. Patient underwent “Double-barrel Superficial Temporal Artery–Middle Cerebral Artery (STA–MCA) bypass surgery with parent vessel occlusion”. This complex surgical procedure took around 10 hours to complete. Post operative period was uneventful, the patient was discharged on 10th POD. Patient recovered completely after the surgery and resumed all normal activities. Commenting on the surgical procedure Dr.Venkatesan MS MCh, Consultant, Department of Neurosurgery who performed the surgery said, “Double-Barrel STA-MCA bypass surgery” is a challenging cerebral revascularization procedure and now considered as high flow bypass surgery. With the help of Microscope, intra op ICG and neuro monitoring we have successfully done the surgery and restored cerebral blood flow to the patient. It’s a proud moment for me started doing cerebral revascularization surgeries like Carotid endarterectomy and bypass surgery in MMHRC. Dr. SelvaMuthuKumaran MCh, Consultant and HOD, Department of Neurosurgery said, an important tool for cerebral revascularization is extra cranial-intracranial (EC-IC) or STA-MCA bypass, which is a surgical procedure to increase cerebral blood flow. This procedure involves connecting a branch of the external carotid artery to a branch of the internal carotid artery directly. This procedure has been used in the treatment of various cerebrovascular ischemic diseases. It is similar to cardiac bypass surgery where blocked heart arteries are bypassed.” Dr. Senthil Kumar MD., Consultant, Department of anesthesia added, Neuroanesthesia is very challenging as it requires continuous monitoring and maintain cerebral perfusion throughout the procedure. Dr B Kannan, Medical Administrator, MMHRC was also present at the press conference.
Immunotherapy – A game changer in cancer treatment
Authored by Dr. C N Patil, HOD and Lead Consultant – Medical Oncology & Haemato-Oncology, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore With the ongoing techade, scientific advancements in cancer treatment have grown by leaps and bounds leading to immense progress in medical science and research in treating cancer. Today, breakthrough methods like immunotherapy are being referred to as a “game-changer” and a “miracle in the making” in cancer treatment and has shown promising results in treating patients with advanced cancer. This method prompts our body’s immune system to specifically combat and target diseases like cancer. This therapy utilizes our body’s natural immune system to kill cancer cells. Also known as immuno-oncology, immunotherapy is a targeted treatment method that can be administered to patients in different forms such as medications, vaccinations, antibody treatments, cellular therapies, intravenously, orally and topically or through a catheter. This is an approved therapy to treat cancers like melanoma, lymphoma, and lung cancer and is also being tested in clinical trials for immune-based treatments for many other types of cancers. Compared to common cancer treatment methods such as surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy, immunotherapy is a fairly new method. Depending on the type of your cancer, your oncologist may use immunotherapy along with surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy or solely as a separate treatment if other methods have failed. This method is extremely advanced and doctors sometimes also use it as a first line of treatment. How does immunotherapy work? Our immune system plays a critical role in helping our body to ward off external and internal diseases and illnesses, however, it cannot detect the issues inside like cancer cells. This usually happens because the cancer cells lack the external markers which are used by our immune system to identify hostile bodies that are essentially ‘hiding’ from it. Furthermore, cancer cells also signal our immune system to not destroy them and in some cases, our immune system is too weak to identify and destroy these cells and may require external help. This is where immunotherapy becomes critical as it enhances our immune system’s ability to destroy the tumour cells, stops the growth of cancer cells and prevents them from travelling to the other parts of the body. What are the different types of immunotherapeutic options available? Today, various types of immunotherapeutic options are available and can be used to treat cancer. These include – Immune checkpoint inhibitors: These drugs help the immune system in recognizing and attacking cancer cells. Cancer vaccines: These expose our immune system to an antigen and trigger it to recognize and destroy that antigen or related materials and prevent the spread of cancer cells. For instance, HPV vaccine is used to prevent cervical, vaginal, vulvar or anal cancer in males and females. CAR T Cell Therapy: This therapy removes and alters our T Cells to improve their ability to combat cancer cells. Non-specific immunotherapies: These treatments boost our immune system and help in attacking cancer cells. What are the side effects of immunotherapy? The side effects of immunotherapy are very different from those in chemotherapy or radiation and are largely related to the stimulation of the immune system. These include – Rash Itching Fever Severe diarrhoea Thyroid dysfunction Liver dysfunction Breathing difficulty What are the advantages of Immunotherapy? A major advantage of immunotherapy is that it can train our immune system to remember cancer cells and creates an “immune memory” which results in long-lasting disease remissions that are maintained even after treatment is completed. Other advantages include – Prevents the destruction of normal cells during the treatment Avoids conditions like Osteoradionecrosis (bone death) and prevents loss of taste Affordable and cost-effective as the approximate cost of treatment ranges from 1 to 4 lakhs per cycle. When should you undergo immunotherapy? Immunotherapy does not work on all types of cancer and if your cancer has been stopped by surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy, then you may not require it. This therapy is not recommended for all types of cancer and you may have to discuss it first with your oncologist before undergoing any trials. How do you know whether immunotherapy is working or not and how many cycles does a patient require? It usually takes 3-4 months for our body to respond to immunotherapy. This response is assessed using CT/PETCT scans. A patient generally undergoes 3-4 cycles of immunotherapy before showing any response. In case there is a response to the treatment, then the treatment is continued till the patient is benefitting and the drug is having an effect on the tumour.

Pure Storage Ushers in the New Era of Unstructured Data Storage with FlashBlade//E
Delivering the benefits of flash at better economics than disk, Pure makes the all-flash data center a reality Pure Storage® (NYSE: PSTG), the IT pioneer that delivers the world’s most advanced data storage technology and services, today announced FlashBlade//E™, a scale-out unstructured data repository built to handle exponential data growth with industry-leading energy efficiency. At an acquisition cost competitive with disk and much lower operational costs, the introduction of FlashBlade//E means that customers no longer need to settle for disk. News Highlights: FlashBlade//E provides a better way to manage unstructured data growth efficiently, reliably, and sustainably with a best-in-class user experience and economics that enable customers to eliminate the last remnants of disk in their data center. Economical at scale: FlashBlade//E is offered at under $0.20 per GB including three years of service. The platform starts at 4PB and scales from there with reliable performance. Industry-leading energy efficiency: FlashBlade//E consumes up to 5x less power than the disk-based systems it will replace. The larger the system the greater the efficiency, helping organizations achieve their increasingly critical sustainability goals. Simplicity, reliability, and a non-disruptive future: FlashBlade//E is built to flex and grow on demand with 10-20x more reliability than hard disk based systems and evolving without disruption or forklift upgrades. With cloud-like simplicity, flexibility and predictable performance, FlashBlade//E remains simple to manage at any scale. FlashBlade//E will be generally available by the end of April 2023. In addition to traditional purchase, customers will have the option to deploy FlashBlade//E through the new Efficiency service tier of Pure Storage Evergreen//One Storage as-a-Service (STaaS) subscription, providing pay-as-you-go economics and a cloud experience with the control of on-premises deployment. Industry Significance: For global organizations, unstructured data capacity is expected to grow by 10x before 2030. For large-capacity, price-sensitive workloads that use current disk-based storage solutions, this growth is unsustainable. Disk-based systems are a burden on many enterprises’ IT teams and budgets as they are challenging to manage, require massive amounts of power, take up large amounts of space and their components fail too often, causing disruption and risking valuable data. Ultimately, this diminishes the ability to derive business value from data. While modern file and object storage solutions are capable of addressing many of these challenges, they haven’t been a viable option for large unstructured data repositories that are price-sensitive – until now. Executive Insight: “With FlashBlade//E, we’re realizing our founder’s original vision of the all-flash data center. For workloads where flash was once price-prohibitive, we are thrilled to provide customers the major benefits Pure delivers at a TCO lower than disk.” – Amy Fowler, VP & General Manager, FlashBlade, Pure Storage “As our customers’ unstructured data growth continues to accelerate, there is demand for more sustainable and scalable storage solutions for everyday workloads. We are excited to be able to meet this need with FlashBlade//E, providing the simplicity and power savings Pure is known for at an acquisition cost lower than disk-based solutions.” – Brian Bartell, Practice Manager for Primary Storage, WWT “While the benefits of flash for high-powered workloads have been largely acknowledged, disk’s price point has limited broader perception of its full potential use. Nevertheless, the need for a modern platform to accommodate the rise in unstructured data at scale is evident. FlashBlade//E’s promise of a more cost-effective, energy-efficient and easier-to-manage approach to everyday workloads makes a compelling case for leaving disk behind. ” – Scott Sinclair, Practice Director, Enterprise Strategy Group Learn More: FlashBlade//E Product Page Blog Post: Introducing FlashBlade//E FlashBlade//E Data Sheet About Pure Storage Pure Storage (NYSE: PSTG) uncomplicates data storage, forever.
