Character building is not just vital for a better today, but a brighter tomorrow: experts during a virtual briefing conducted by SOS Children’s Villages of India
SOS Children’s of Villages works towards enabling children under care to become self-supporting and contributing members of society. For this, education and skills are important, but sound character is paramount. Character strength exhibits itself in a host of situations and contexts, contributing to an individual’s psychological and physiological well-being and functioning; hence, this is critical for the wholesome development of children and young adults. Character building sessions have, hence, been introduced to empower Mothers, co-workers and children. During the session, Mr. Sumanta Kar, Secretary General, SOS Children’s Villages of India said, “Through character building we prepare our children and youth with 21st century skill sets and attributes that enable them to be become self-reliant and contributing members of society. These sessions are based on three pillars: Concern for Others, Concern for the Environment and Citizenship Concern. Implementation of the ‘learnt’ in actual life; creating an environment where elements of character building are applied on a daily basis, becoming a part of life; and consistent exchange between participants to share experiences, feedbacks, inputs, solutions, and much more, are essential, and, hence encouraged.” Speaking of qualitative and quantitative impact of character building on children, Prof. Nandita Babu, Senior Professor, Department of Psychology, University of Delhi & Developmental Psychologist said, “To lead a life in sync with the individual’s community values, and to contribute to universal concerns for human rights and welfare, character development of the child is extremely important. Character development of the child mostly takes place within the family; therefore, every individual involved in the child’s life should be able to emulate a strong character that is considered of value societally, and globally.” She added: “Effective character-building requires an intentional, proactive and comprehensive approach that promotes core values in all phases of family and community life. It is extremely important for adults to practice and become role models before starting to impart values to children. Children are constructive learners, therefore, to develop character, children need opportunities for observing the same, before implementing.” Stating her experience, SOS Mother Soniya, said “Character building is an important component of wholesome child development, and a caregiver is a vital part of a child’s journey. Hence, sessions pertaining to character building are crucial for Mothers and co-workers. Twenty-first century skill sets demand attributes and qualities like: Perspective Taking and Empathy, Helpfulness, Gratitude and Hope, Humility and Respect, Honesty and Self-Regulation. If these are cemented in caregivers, they can be able imparters. Character building also helps enhance mental wellbeing, through which all-round wellbeing is secured, empowering individuals for better challenge management. During the session, the Bal Panchayat initiative of the Family Strengthening Programme was also introduced. The Bal Panchayat or Children’s Parliament is a group of about 20 children or more, who engage themselves to find solutions to pressing social challenges. Each Bal Panchayat has its own leader and council, who identify and address challenges being faced by their respective community. The members are trained on a wide variety of subjects, in order to equip them with the skill sets needed to implement their responsibilities. Raja, ex-President, Bal Panchayat, former Balpanchayat Member, recalled the rich learning experience he had during his time as President, “One of the most important things one learns is to acquire a sense of responsibility towards the community by addressing pressing social challenges and designing concerned innovative solutions, ensuring good citizenship. The confidence with which one approaches concerned authorities in position to take action, where needed, is enhanced manifold. The journey empowered me with 21st century skill sets, including communication, social and life skills. Decision making power, public speaking and facilitating awareness generation on a wide variety of subjects were some of the many other skills inculcated.” Being the leader of the Bal Panchayat, Raja, along with his other friends, mobilised children and their parents to encourage education and preventing school drop-out rate, which is now zero in the cluster; another challenge: the cluster is situated on the banks of the river Ganga; depending on the situation of the village, floods can increase the spread of vector-borne diseases. During the post-flood situation, Raja took the initiative of promoting good sanitation practices among children. They also started a cleanliness drive in the community. Baby Devi is an active SHG member of Abhinandan, Ratauli cluster, Begusarai. Her daughter Roshni is a member of the Laxmibai Bal Panchayat and is now in class 12. This Bal Panchayat focusses on the education of children, helping buy education material. “My daughter once initiated a drive, where everyone contributed what they could towards procuring necessary education material. This was to raise the same for those who just couldn’t afford it, thereby encouraging children and parents to continue education, so essential for wholesome child development.” It was further concluded that apart from caregivers, educators should also consider incorporating character education into the curriculum, creating discussion opportunities about respect, honesty and responsibility while taking actions to ensure that the character traits we want children to develop are showcased by us, to begin with. About SOS Children’s Villages of India Established in 1964, SOS Children’s Villages of India provides children without parental care or at the risk of losing it, a value chain of quality care services that goes beyond childcare alone, ensuring comprehensive child development. Aster RV Hospital unveils new campaign – I ACT FAST for Pediatric First Aid Training
In conjunction with Children’s Day, Aster RV Hospital unveils ‘I ACT FAST’ campaign for Pediatric First Aid training – an ‘Algorithmic First Aid Training’. This unique initiative provides training to address common childhood illnesses and injuries. The first-of-its-kind campaign launched at RV Educational Institutions (RVEI) aims to educate and offer guidance to parents, teachers, and caregivers on pediatric first aid. Taking care of kids is an extremely delicate task as they are ill and accident-prone. This is true for children of all ages- from newborns, and infants to older kids who are almost fully grown. Hence it is of utmost importance that anybody who has the responsibility of taking care of kids, whether it is a parent, teacher, babysitter, or older sibling should know the very basics of how to act in an emergency situation. Bearing this in mind, the perpetual campaign ‘I ACT FAST’ is designed to have an algorithmic approach to nearly 15 common illnesses and injuries children are prone to. I-Identify the injury or illness A-Activate emergency services as necessary C-Control /cure the emergency T-Transport to the nearest facility & First Aid Safety Training Calling this initiative, the need of the hour, and the necessity to address the parenting community a top priority, Dr. Sujatha Thyagarajan, Sr. Consultant – Pediatrics & Pediatric Intensive Care, Aster RV Hospital said, “Children are vulnerable to various illnesses and injuries which requires immediate attention. Unfortunately, the majority of caregivers, parents, and teachers are not familiar with first-aid care for children. In times of emergency, there is usually panic followed by google suggestions and other informal practices. Hence there is a need for structured and informed training of the caregivers so the right care can be given. The initiative is a hybrid one inculcating the best of offline and online practices. Also, the aim is to reach as many people as possible by spreading awareness. This can be achieved by the multiplier effect of participants. The idea is that the trained people would further train others and spread the message of attending to the health needs of children.” This course is basic and necessary and will cover the most common situations that can and will arise, as well as less common but dangerous situations that require an immediate response. After taking this course caregivers will feel more comfortable and confident. There are many situations where appropriate steps taken immediately can save the lives of our children, prevent future complications, prevent bad situations from getting worse, and make sure that the healing process starts effectively. The aim of this program is to empower the community in handling such common emergencies in children. Parents, caregivers, teachers, and students interested in taking part in this campaign can register via an email shared. 34% people tested for HbA1c in Bengaluru found to have diabetes: Tata 1mg labs
Most people being diagnosed for diabetes were in 60+ age group More men found to suffer from diabetes than women Ahead of World Diabetes Day (14th November), Tata 1mg, India’s leading digital healthcare platform, shared that about 34% of people in Bengaluru who tested for HbA1c at Tata 1mg labs were found to have diabetes, with most of the cases falling in the 40+ age group. The proportion of diabetes patients was found to be higher in men compared to women. This report has been prepared on the basis of a retrospective data analysis conducted on people who wanted to get themselves checked specifically for diabetes, or those who took a preventive health screening package. The screening was done through HbA1c test (or glycosylated hemoglobin test) which tells about the average level of blood sugar over the past 2 to 3 months. A value of HbA1c level ≥ 6.5% is considered to be indicative of diabetes. A total of 75,661 blood samples were tested for diabetes at Tata 1mg labs in Bengaluru between March-October 2022. Out of these samples, 25,977 (about 34.3%) were diagnosed as positive for the disease. The incidence was 39.3% in the 40-60 years age group, followed by 60+ years (45.2%) and 25-40 years (14.8%). More men (55%) were found to suffer from diabetes compared to women (45%). Said Dr Prashant Nag, Clinical Head, Tata 1mg Labs: “Diabetes is a leading threat to public health globally, and the view is gloomier for countries like India, where the diabetes burden has risen significantly in recent decades and will continue to rise in the coming decades. As the prevalence of diabetes rises, more young adults and adolescents tend to develop diabetes, particularly if they are overweight/obese. Not just this, more people are now falling prey to borderline diabetes. It is a condition wherein blood sugar levels are slightly above the normal range, but not high enough to be called diabetes. A report published in 2018 estimated 1 in every 6 Indians to have borderline diabetes.” He added: “All adults in India without risk factors should be screened with a test for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes starting at age 35, instead of age 45. However, many experts have recommended that screening for diabetes should now be initiated at 25 years of age, looking at the recent increase in diabetes cases in young adults in the country.” In addition to the genetic predisposition, the main culprits for causing surge in diabetes cases in India are unhealthy lifestyle factors like lack of physical activity, excessive fast-food consumption, smoking, and alcohol consumption. However, certain studies have shown that COVID-19 is also capable of causing direct damage to the pancreas that could worsen sugar levels in known diabetics, and even induce the onset of diabetes in previously non-diabetics, the expert said. Said Ms. Chhavi Kohli, Chief diabetes educator & Nutritionist with Medanta the Medicity, Gurgaon (also on the advisory panel of Tata 1mg): ‘’There is no special diet for Diabetes; the whole idea is to nourish the body by taking various nutrients in the right proportion and right time. The focus should be on eating lots of seasonal colourful vegetables, consuming healthy fats and adequate protein sources. For carbs, choose a variety of whole grains. Do not miss fruits, use them as snacks and avoid packaged and processed food items. Also, a lot of myths prevail around the right diet for Diabetes. Do not fall prey to misinformation. Always consult certified nutritionists and diabetes educators for your diabetes.’’ Diabetes imposes lifelong demands on people living with the disease and their families, and people with diabetes do better when they take active control of their own care. Diabetes can be tackled with a balanced and healthy diet, an active lifestyle, timely intake of prescribed medications, regular health checkups, and planned doctor visits. Samples tested for HbA1c* at Tata 1mg Labs across Bengaluru from March–October 2022: Total No. of Tests 75,661 Diagnosed with diabetes 25,977 The current gold standard for diabetes screening is the HbA1c test. Gender Frequency Male 14,337 Female 11,640 Age Group Frequency Below 25 131 25-40 3856 40-60 10,223 Above 60 11,767 About Tata 1mg Tata 1mg is India’s largest Digital Health Platform. Apollo Hospitals to hold the world’s largest one-day Sugar Check drive on World Diabetes Day set a new record!
The random blood glucose test will be available free of cost at all Apollo Hospitals, 170 Apollo clinics and 1200 Apollo Pharmacies across India Apollo Hospitals, Asia’s foremost integrated healthcare services provider will hold the world’s largest one-day Sugar Check drive on November 14, observed as World Diabetes Day, and set a new global record. The hospital group will aim to break the Guinness World Record for the Most Blood Glucose Level tests done in 8 hours across multiple venues. Diabetes ranks third among the NCDs contributing to overall mortality in India. Diabetes is a silent killer and as it can take a long time before symptoms appear, people may not be aware that they have high blood sugar levels. The consequences of diabetes if not diagnosed early and managed in time with medication and lifestyle modifications include the risk of premature death. Apart from this, diabetes also increases the risk of the individual suffering from a stroke, heart attack, kidney failure, blindness and amputation of a limb or limbs. Individuals can walk in for the test at their nearest Apollo Hospitals, 170 Apollo Clinics and 1200 Apollo Pharmacies for the free random blood sugar test. This unique campaign will help identify individuals having undiagnosed diabetes with high blood sugar levels and also allow those with diabetes to check on how well their diabetes is being managed. The output of the tests will be fed into the Apollo 24/7 app for further management by the individuals and their physicians. Dr Prathap C. Reddy, Chairman, Apollo Hospitals Group said, “Our intention in aiming for a record number of blood sugar tests for diabetes on World Diabetes Day goes beyond just numbers to put the spotlight on diabetes and its impact. India is at high risk and faces a silent tsunami of diabetes. The number of people with Type 2 diabetes is increasing with a study by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare indicating that 11.5% of Indians above the age of 45 had diabetes. With around 77 million people with diabetes residing in India, the economic burden of the disease with its chronic nature is increasingly affecting the productivity of the young workforce, exhausting 5 to 25% share of an average Indian household earning. The annual estimated cost of diabetes treatment that was at Rs.10,000 crore in 2003 is expected to rise to as high as Rs.1,26,000 crores by 2025. Dr Prathap C. Reddy added, “The record attempt will put the spotlight on the many people living with undiagnosed diabetes and the need to increase testing for early diagnosis and timely treatment. Periodic testing is recommended especially in high-risk groups such as those above 40 and with a family history of diabetes. This also includes individuals whose lifestyle includes an unhealthy diet and physical inactivity and those who are overweight or obese. We hope that this record of the ‘Most Blood Glucose Level tests done in 8 hours across multiple venues will be successful and will lead to a bett awareness and understanding of diabetes and proactive management” “The test for blood sugar will be a strip-based random blood sugar test. This is a quick test for which an individual does not need to fast beforehand. A result of 200 mg/dl or above shows that a person has diabetes. The test indicates that a person may have diabetes if the blood sugar level is above 126 mg/dl. IF NOT NOW, WHEN?
Authored by Dr. Mahesh D M, Consultant – Endocrinology, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore Every year on November 14, the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin with Charles Best in 1922, World Diabetes Day (WDD) is observed. In response to growing concerns about the escalating health hazard posed by diabetes, the IDF and the World Health Organization established it in 1991. A blue circle emblem is used to signify the World Diabetes Day campaign. Diabetes and obesity are two serious illnesses that continue to spread around the world. Over the last four to five decades, obesity has steadily increased around the world and is now one of the main causes of ill health in most nations. The implementation of efficient obesity prevention programmes has been delayed and inconsistent despite over two decades of recommendations from reputable national and international organisations, particularly WHO. The three pandemics—obesity, undernutrition, and climate change—represent the Global Syndemic that affects most people in every country and region worldwide. They constitute a syndemic, or synergy of epidemics, because they co-occur in time and place, interact with each other to produce complex sequelae, and share common underlying societal drivers. Interacting with such complexity is challenging for public health. Nonetheless, public–private partnerships with the food industry have been created for multiple purposes, including the promotion of healthy workplaces, the development of foods and drinks low in salt, sugar, and fat, support for local, less processed foodstuffs, environmental protection (e.g., organic production and reduced food miles), and social benefits (e.g., investing through corporate social responsibility). Diabetes is a significant global challenge to the health and wellbeing of individuals, families, and countries. Half of all people living with diabetes are undiagnosed. 1 in 2 people who need insulin cannot access or afford it. 3 in 4 people with diabetes live in low- and middle-income countries. Diabetes currently affects one in ten people worldwide. The rising number of people affected by diabetes is putting added strain on healthcare systems. Healthcare professionals must know how to detect and diagnose the condition early and provide the best possible care. Despite being discovered a century ago, millions of people with diabetes still lack access to insulin and other essential diabetes-care supplies. Diabetes patients run the danger of significant and sometimes fatal complications, such as VIZ: Heart Attack, Stroke, Kidney Failure, Blindness, Lower-limb Amputation, without treatment or enough support. Blood glucose monitoring and oral medications are often necessary for managing diabetes in many people. The first step in controlling and preventing the illness is understanding it. People with diabetes must have access to continual education in order to comprehend their condition and practise the daily self-care procedures necessary to maintain good health and prevent complications. The second year of the World Diabetes Day 2021-23 campaign is centred around the idea of Educate To Protect Tomorrow. Furthermore, type 2 diabetes can be averted in approximately 50% of cases. People who have diabetes or are at risk for developing it require access to wholesome foods and a fitness centre. Both are essential elements in the treatment and prevention of diabetes. By 2045, it’s anticipated that over 700 million individuals would be dealing with diabetes. Therefore, it is imperative that we all take action right away to spread awareness and offer everyone with access to diabetes diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.
Exercise and its benefits on heart health
Dr. Divya Marina Fernandes, Consultant – Heart Failure Specialist & Interventional Cardiologist It is not “just exercise” which is important for a good heart, I’d rather call it “Awareness”. You need to be aware of your heart’s conditions and how much you are allowed to push it to give it the exercise that it needs. You need to be aware of what foods are good for your heart and what is bad and how much you are allowed to cheat when it comes to diet. You need to be aware of your mental health as that directly impacts your heart. How exercise improves heart: Primarily due to our sedentary lifestyle, exercise has become very essential not only for your heart but for the whole body. Cardio exercises especially when performed in the aerobic band have proven to improve the cardiac and lungs tolerance, improving the blood flow within the body and preventing heart attacks and strokes in the long run. Exercise protects you from long term damage due to diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol and keeps your bone joints stress free too. Best exercises: A combination of both cardio and strength training is recommended. Aerobic exercises like playing badminton, running, cycling and swimming can be done by both youngsters and elderly according to their capacity. Weight training helps strengthen your muscles including the cardiac muscle, bones and joints. It helps you lose deep adipose fat which often causes heart attacks and strokes. Any form of moderate exercise for at least 150 mins in a week is protective for the heart. Over exerting yourself in the gym from prolonged hours can put pressure on your heart and your joints and can cause problems in the long run. Listen to your body and stop when necessary. Walking is one of the easiest and most economical forms of exercise. Regular walks strengthen the heart muscle. The pumping of blood improves as the muscle strength improves, this causes the blood flow to improve and move better, thus lowering blood pressure. 30-40 mins of walk at least 5 days a week regularly will help reduce blood pressure by 5-10 mmHg. Anxiety can cause a temporary increase in the blood pressure which reduces once you are calm. However recurrent episodes of anxiety and stress can cause fluctuations in blood pressure ultimately leading to high BP readings. This, along with smoking and unhealthy lifestyle, can lead to hypertension. With walking, you tend to become calmer, enjoy your surroundings, make new friends on your walks and this helps to work out together and keep your mind at peace. As you enjoy the early morning breeze or late evening chill, you feel satisfied and happier causing your anxiety levels to drop. Try doing an activity you like, like singing, dancing, walking, painting or cooking, playing games. All these reduce your stress levels and keep your stress hormones in check. Stop smoking, eat a healthy diet with lots of fiber and good amount of protein, sleep for at least 6 hrs., monitor blood pressure, cholesterol and sugars regularly. However, it is always better to get yourself checked with an ECG, ECHO and TMT before you plan to start a structured exercise pattern.
