Heat exposure also places an increased strain on the heart and can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke if the internal body temperature is not adequately regulated by the cardiovascular system. The cold causes blood vessels to contract, which can raise blood pressure, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke. Angina, or chest pain due to coronary heart disease, can also worsen in winter when coronary arteries constrict in the cold. Excessive heat can cause increased sweating leading to water loss from the body and dehydration. Due to this, the volume of plasma reduces, the concentration of blood components (red blood cells) rises and if accompanied by high cholesterol, can potentially lead to blockages in the heart vessels causing a heart attack. Heat, especially heat waves can also increase the blood pressure, cause faster and irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias) which can cause strokes and heart attacks. The amount of oxygen needed for the heart is higher leading to symptoms of chest pain, breathlessness and loss of consciousness.” It usually affects elderly above the age of 65 years. As we age, the exercise capacity of the heart is reduced, pre existing diseases like high cholesterol, hypertension and diabetes are also present in the majority of them. This in turn increases the risk. Most healthy people tolerate weather changes well. People with a previously diagnosed heart condition, uncontrolled diabetes, high cholesterol or hypertension may not readily accommodate to harsh weather. Also, people who are on medications to remove excessive fluid from the body (diuretics) are at a higher risk as they can be exposed to dehydration. Go slow. Do not exercise outdoors in extreme weather conditions. If you exercise, drink adequate fluids and keep yourself hydrated. Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol intake. Regular bath and shower or an ice pack if needed. Eat small and light meals. Extreme cold weather can also put pressure on your heart. The blood vessels respond to severe cold by becoming narrower (constriction). This increases blood pressure and decreases blood circulation. Cold weather can increase your heart rate leading to an increase in oxygen demand.  If there is an associated infection due to the cold temperature, it puts an additional strain on the heart. Risk factors – are similar to heat wave risk factors itself. Wear multiple layers of warm clothing to maintain your temperature. Avoid outdoor exercise. Avoid high fat food, avoid smoking. Consume hot soups and warm meals. Stay active indoors. If you have symptoms of chest pain, giddiness, breathlessness or fast heart rate (palpitations), please consult a doctor. You may not be having a heart attack but there might be symptoms of heat or cold intolerance which can be treated on time.

Mangalore Chemicals & Fertilizers Limited (MCF), a subsidiary of Zuari Agro Chemicals Limited, an Adventz Group company, has announced the successful implementation of the Ammonia Energy Improvement Project. MCF, with a history of over 50 years has attained energy efficiency at par with modern plants. The project was implemented at a capital cost of over Rs.400 Crore and is expected to deliver significant improvement to the bottom line.   MCF converted its urea operation earlier from naphtha to gas based after the receipt of gas in December 2020. In the process, it has converted the vintage plant to a highly energy efficient plant at par with modern plants to comply with the mandate of the DOF to achieve the Target Energy Norm.   The existing plants were studied by renowned technology providers in the field of ammonia and the project was completed with the support of marquee global and domestic suppliers. Post commissioning, the ammonia production will increase by 25% coupled with reduction in the energy consumption by about 10-12%. Prapul (21s) and Prajwal (24), siblings from Bengaluru helped save the lives of two blood cancer patients. The brothers were matched to two different genetic twins within a brief time after their registration as potential blood stem cell donors with DKMS-BMST a non-profit organization dedicated to the fight against blood cancer. This is the first time for DKMS-BMST that two brothers were independently matched with two different patients from India, and their donated stem cell helped save the two precious lives. Prapul says, “As a dental student, I am aware of the challenges that blood cancer and other blood disorder patients face. Stem Cell transplant is the only chance at survival for most of these patients. I registered as a donor in one of the registration events organized by DKMS BMST Foundation India in my college. Registration is a simple process wherein you only have to give your cheek swab sample and fill a consent form. Within a year of the registration, I got the opportunity to donate my stem cells. It has been a great feeling knowing that I helped someone get a second chance at life! Prapul is a BDS student, registered in 2019, and he got the opportunity to donate in 2021. Their parents and family were incredibly supportive, and they have become a role-model in their extended family and local community. Both of us are now actively encouraging our friends and family to register as potential blood stem cell donors.” In India, the percentage of people who know about blood stem cell transplant as a lifesaving treatment modality is abysmal. When some patient needs a stem cell transplant, their odd of finding a match is more amongst people of similar ethnicity. For Indian patients, having a large donor registry comprising people of Indian registry will ensure that more people who can benefit from this treatment modality can find genetic matches. To celebrate the occasion for the successful placement of around 12500 implants an extravagant scientific event was held in Chennai. A 22- year-old male while riding a two-wheeler collided with an electric car and suffered a head injury. He was shifted to Aster CMI Hospital, Hebbal on Friday evening, i.e., 28th October 2022, from a nearby Multi-speciality Hospital, and on Monday, 31st October 2022 he was declared brain-dead by the panel of experts. The family members agreed to organ donation, the harvesting was carried out on Karnataka Rajyotsava day, on Tuesday, 1st November 2022. By doing so, many recipients’ lives were saved, who were waiting to receive organs. According to Jeevasarthakathe, the following organs: Heart, Liver, Kidneys, Cornea & Skin were harvested & went to various Hospitals in Bengaluru, according to the rota system followed.
