Azim Premji University launches open access Early Learner Assessment tool for children between 3-5 years
Azim Premji University today launched Early Learner Assessment (ELA) – an open access handbook for developmental assessment of children between 3-5 years. Developed by early childhood education experts, the handbook will help professionals engaged in research of young children and parents to gather information about a child’s development across a broad spectrum, including physical-motor, cognitive, language and communication, socio-emotional, creative thinking, and aesthetic expression. The ELA tool, which is evidence-based, comprehensive, culturally sensitive and set in the Indian context, has been developed based on extensive data analysis and field tested widely. The tool has the capacity to cover all major domains of a child’s development. It will help assess a child within an hour spread across two days irrespective of whether she is attending an early childhood programme such as anganwadi, balwadi, nursery school, kindergarten or any other centre that provides preschool education. “Assessing a child’s developmental and learning outcomes will allow us to understand her current level of competencies and the quality of the preschool programme. This will help in designing and modifying the preschool environment to help children achieve their developmental potential,” said Kinnari Pandya, Associate Professor, Azim Premji University. Azim Premji Foundation, which has been working towards improving the public education system in India, supports the public preschool programme, the Integrated Child Development Services Scheme, in providing quality preschool education. It is essential to capture the children’s current level of development to design a curriculum that will help them achieve their potential. The ECE tool was developed to understand the learning levels of children in a rural context and track the changes in the quality of preschool education. You can download the handbook here: https://azimpremjiuniversity.edu.in/ece-resources-and-publications About Azim Premji University Azim Premji University, Bengaluru, was established under the Azim Premji University Act 2010 of the Government of Karnataka. An Overview of Plastic Recycling
Ø Plastic recycling refers to the process of recovering waste or scrap plastic and reprocessing the materials into functional and useful products. This activity is known as the plastic recycling process. The goal of recycling plastic is to reduce high rates of plastic pollution while putting less pressure on virgin materials to produce brand new plastic products. This approach helps to conserve resources and diverts plastics from landfills or unintended destinations such as oceans. Ø Plastics are durable, lightweight and inexpensive materials. They can readily be molded into various products which find uses in a plethora of applications. Every year, more than 420 million tons of plastics are manufactured across the globe. Consequently, the reuse, recovery and the recycling of plastics are extremely important. Ø What Plastics Are Recyclable? There are six common types of plastics. Following are some typical products you will find for each of plastic: PS (Polystyrene)– Example: foam hot drink cups, plastic cutlery, containers, and yogurt. PP (Polypropylene) – Example: lunch boxes, take-out food containers, ice cream containers. LDPE (Low-density polyethylene)– Example: garbage bins and bags. PVC (Plasticised Polyvinyl chloride or polyvinyl chloride)—Example: cordial, juice or squeeze bottles. HDPE (High-density polyethylene)– Example: shampoo containers or milk bottles. PET (Polyethylene terephthalate)– Example: fruit juice and soft drink bottles. Ø The Plastic Recycling Process: www.gmrecycler.com The simplest of plastic recycling processes involves collecting, sorting, shredding, washing, melting, and pelletizing. The actual particular processes vary based on plastic resin or type of plastic product. Most plastic recycling facilities use the following two-step process: Step One: Sorting plastics automatically or with a manual sort to make sure all the contaminants are removed from the plastic waste stream. Step Two: Melting down plastics directly into a new shape or shredding into flakes then melting down before being finally processed into granulates.
U.S. Immigration (USIF) to host free EB-5 consultations across 5 major cities in India in April 2023
The EB-5 seminars are scheduled to take place in five cities in India including Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore With an aim to bring families in India the opportunity to invest in a global future and enable business, education, career and residential opportunities in the United States, U.S. Immigration Fund (USIF) is set to host a roadshow across 5 major cities in India. Starting April 13th, USIF will host EB-5 consultations in Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai and Bangalore. Through this series of exclusive seminars across the nation, USIF intends to educate investors and families on the details of the EB-5 program and the process of obtaining a U.S. Green Card through high quality real estate investments throughout the U.S. These meetings will allow investors the opportunity to meet one-on-one with the USIF Team as well as an established immigration attorney from Donoso & Partners LLC with years of experience in EB-5 to go over their specific case. Speaking about the initiative, Nicholas A. Mastroianni, III, President of U.S. Immigration Fund (USIF), said, “These meetings will enlighten future investors on the benefits and nuances of the EB-5 visa program. With the help of our team and immigration attorneys, we hope to help Indian investors and their families plan for a future in their U.S. studying or working and obtaining a clear understanding as to why the EB-5 visa program stands out among the alternative visa options.” The U.S. Congress created the EB-5 Program in 1990 to enable high net worth Foreign Investors to obtain a U.S. Visa by investing in a U.S. business that will benefit the economy and create more jobs. Over the last few years, India has become the second largest EB-5 investor market in the world. The EB-5 program is a residency by investment program that provides a direct path to U.S. permanent residency for foreign investors who invest a minimum of $800,000 in a qualifying project and create at least 10 jobs in the U.S. Indian investors have been taking advantage of this program for years, with a steady increase in EB-5 applications in the past 12 months. Not only does the EB-5 program open doors for residency within the U.S. for the investor, his or her spouse, and unmarried children under 21, it also provides a potential return on their investment capital. The additional benefits to the program such as concurrent filing as well as U.S. Immigration Fund’s brand new investor financing program make it the perfect time for Indian applicants to invest in an available EB-5 project. USIF is currently offering two distinctive projects for EB-5 investment, Pier Village Phase V and TSX Broadway, both with exceptional developers with strong track records of success. The executive team and immigration attorney partners for USIF will be on the ground to meet the Indian investors throughout April 2023. The schedule is as below: April 13-16 – Mumbai April 17-18 – Delhi April 19-20 – Hyderabad April 23 – Chennai April 24-25 – Bangalore To schedule a meeting with USIF or to learn more, please visit: https://visaeb-5.com/about-eb-5/eb-5-consultation/.

“Health for All” on World Health Day: Helping India in its mission to help patients in need
DKMS-BMST supports underprivileged patients in their fight against blood cancer Thenmozhi, Harini’s mother, faced a life-altering experience just a few months after her daughter’s birth. Harini was diagnosed with Familial Hemophagocytic Lymph Histiocytosis (HLH), a disorder impacting the body’s immune system. This debilitating disease could harm her physical and mental growth if left untreated. A stem cell transplant was the only curative treatment option for her condition. Since the disorder is extremely rare, the cost of treatment was exorbitant. It was very difficult for her parents to arrange the necessary funds for the treatment. Harini’s father, who worked in a factory, often had to miss work due to his daughter’s treatment. This had a severe impact on the family’s financial situation. In an effort to pay for her lifesaving treatment, he sold their only asset, a house in their village. However, the funds raised were insufficient, and they were left with no means of support. “I knew she was suffering, but I was helpless,” her father said. The family desperately needed financial support to bear the remaining treatment cost. Just as they lost hope, her treating physician connected them with DKMS-BMST, and their Patient Funding Programme covered part of the treatment costs. Harini’s mother was a match and donated her stem cells to give her daughter a second chance at life. The transplant was successful, and the family looks positively into the future. Like Harini, there are thousands of young patients in need of financial assistance, and DKMS, through its DKMS-BMST Patient Funding Programme, is trying to reduce the financial burden of these patients. Every year, over 1 lakh new patients are diagnosed with various blood cancers and life-threatening blood disorders in India. The most effective treatment for such diseases is a blood stem cell transplant that helps patients live a normal life afterward. Unfortunately, getting stem cell transplants done is tough for low-income families of the society. Guidance related to treatment, financial support, and planning is the most critical factor affecting India’s access to transplantation. DKMS BMST Foundation India, a non-profit organization, aims to save the lives of financially underprivileged patients by covering a part of the treatment costs, thus, helping them access lifesaving stem cell transplants. Patrick Paul, CEO, DKMS-BMST informs, “As we commemorate World Health Day 2023, with the theme – ‘Health for All,’ we reiterate our commitment to help India on its mission towards providing access to healthcare by supporting blood cancers and blood disorder patients through our various programmes. The DKMS-BMST’s patient funding programme aims to improve the situation of patients who cannot access stem cell transplants due to financial constraints. The programme covers a part of the treatment costs for those patients meeting the eligibility criteria. Over the years, we have supported many patients through our Patient Funding and Thalassemia programmes. The programme has given many youngsters from various parts of the country a new lease on life. Further, we also collaborate with our partner agencies to help patients receive assistance in searching for other funding sources to cover the treatment and related costs.” Under the DKMS-BMST Thalassemia programme, DKMS-BMST cooperates with local NGOs and transplantation clinics that organize events where pediatric Thalassemia patients and their siblings provide buccal swab samples for free HLA typing. In cases where there is no matching sibling for a sick child, we also help them in an unrelated donor search, adds Patrick. Success Stories Harleen Harleen was diagnosed with Beta Thalassemia at a very early age. She was on continuous blood transfusions from the age of 1.5 yrs. Initially, she received blood every 15 days, and later she started requiring 3 units of blood transfusion every month. In 2021, CMC Ludhiana Hospital conducted a free HLA typing camp in association with DKMS-BMST at their center, where Harleen and her elder brother Indrajeet gave their cheek swab sample for testing. Later Harleen found a perfect match with her brother. However, the family could not afford the transplant’s cost due to their financial condition. The family applied for various government schemes and crowdfunding platforms. Even then, there was a substantial shortfall which was also unaffordable to Harleen’s parents due to their dire financial condition. In March 2022, the case was referred to the DKMS-BMST Patient Funding Programme. Upon evaluation of the document and approval from the Medical Advisory Committee, Harleen received confirmation of Patient Funding support in April-2022. Harleen successfully underwent her transplant in August-2022 and has received a second chance at life. Mohith Mohith was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia, a severe blood disorder, when he was just 3 years old. His blood count was very low, and he was put on blood and platelet transfusions to maintain his blood levels. The doctors suggested that Mohith undergo a stem cell transplant for complete recovery, and fortunately, his 6-month-old baby brother Sudharshan’s HLA matched with Mohith. However, the cost of the transplant was exorbitant for the family. Mohith’s family came from a very underprivileged economical background and survived on daily wages. They tried borrowing money and taking loans but were lent only until they could finance his transfusions and were completely out of funds for his transplant. It was hard for them to survive every day, and Mohith’s illness was drowning them in debt and making their lives difficult. During treatment at ICH Hospital, Chennai, the treating doctors referred Mohith’s parents to take the support of DKMS-BMST. Mohith’s case was evaluated, and the Patient Funding Programme provided part of the treatment cost required for the transplant. Mohith received the stem cells of his younger brother and underwent a successful stem cell transplant in February 2022 and has completely recovered. ******* About DKMS BMST Foundation India: A non-profit organization dedicated to the fight against blood cancer and other blood disorders such as thalassemia and aplastic anemia. We aim to improve the situation of patients suffering from blood cancer and other blood disorders in India and worldwide by raising awareness about blood stem cell transplantation and registering potential blood stem cell donors. By doing this, DKMS-BMST
