“Oral hygiene is a largely neglected health issue in India. Indians are widely affected by tooth decay, periodontal disease, and oral cancer. With almost 85–90% of adults facing oral health problems, India is considered the world capital for oral cancer. This begins during childhood due to a lack of awareness and an unequal distribution of oral health care amongst India’s underprivileged population. Over the last 6 years, Embassy and its corporate and NGO partners have been working to provide a holistic health and hygiene programme that focuses on the provision of preventative health kits and awareness three times a year, along with annual check-ups. Included in the kit are a tube of toothpaste, a toothbrush, and a tongue cleaner for each student, which are supplemented with regular awareness sessions on how to correctly and efficiently use them. This year, we distributed health kits to over 41,000 government school students across India. We created an oral hygiene storybook on the importance of dental care, which includes a calendar to help students ensure they brush their teeth twice a day. 15,000 books, titled Swami’s New Lesson, were translated into 4 languages and distributed across government schools in Bangalore, Pune, Chennai, Noida, and Mumbai. During our annual comprehensive health screenings, doctors help students understand any dental issues they might be facing and guide them on how to take the best care of their teeth. This year, more than 16,000 children across 68 government schools were screened. Understanding common dental problems and why they happen will help children learn how to prevent them. Untreated dental conditions can cause poor and misaligned tooth development, leading to more serious problems as a child grows up. We must do our best to teach children across our country how to take care of themselves, especially those who have little or no access to regular dental care.”

Tata Communications has partnered with Pitchandikulam Forest officials to rejuvenate and restore the Nagan Thangal Lake for effective groundwater recharge and provide access to safe drinking water for the community in Upparapalayam, Pothur village in Tiruvallur district.The Nanneer project focusses on the restoration work which includes lake deepening, plantation of indigenous trees, shrubs, reeds, setting up of landforms, such as bird islands to attract and enhance the biodiversity. The project benefits around 12,000 people of which 60 per cent are from marginalised communities. The lake, spread over 15 acres, is desilted to a depth of 1.5 m in 4 acres. Recent rain has contributed to 1,00,000 cubic meters of fresh water in the lake, helping it reach its full capacity. More than 4000 indigenous tropical dry evergreen forest trees and shrubs have been planted around the lake leading to increased biodiversity in the area. In addition, insects, birds and small animals have found a new home, giving a boost to the fauna and flora in the region. Interestingly, it has been noticed that even migratory birds such as Pintail, Common Teal, Common Coot, Marsh Sandpiper, etc. have started to visit the lake. Today, 13 th March 2023, Tata Communications inaugurated The Blue Green Centre, a knowledge and learning facility, where the lake’s history, local landscape, all details of the restoration project are showcased to spread the awareness of the initiative and promote many more of such projects. The project is connected to the Schools in Action for the Planet project supported by Tata Communications to encourage environment education and action for learners in government schools in Ambattur area, Chennai. School children from 32 government and under-privileged schools (approx. 3000 students) have access and the opportunity to know more about the restoration details closely. Over 400 Tata Communications employees volunteered and clocked 1600+ volunteering hours towards this project. The winner of the Qualcomm Design in India Challenge 2022 and recipient of a cash award of INR 65 Lakhs is TechEagle Innovations Private Limited, who showcased an AI/5G enabled on-demand drone delivery airline aimed at saving and improving lives. The first runner up, receiving a cash award of INR 50 Lakhs, is React Labs Private Limited with their smart, connected, self-cleaning home cooking appliance for Indian homes featuring 10 different cooking functions. Second runner up, winning a cash award of INR 35 Lakhs, is EyeROV (IROV) Technologies Private Limited, an underwater robotics company developing unmanned autonomous surface vehicle to be deployed in dams, rivers, and lakes. Benefits offered by MathWorks®: Through the association with MathWorks, all startups were eligible to receive support from MathWorks in computational modeling and algorithm development. Engagement opportunities with Government officials: The program offered opportunities for the startups to engage with senior members of Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). Events Participation: All startups got an opportunity to showcase their products and technologies at Qualcomm Innovation Forum and YourStory TechSparks, held in Bangalore. Access to Innovation Commercialization Fund: The Qualcomm® Design in India Challenge startups alumni from past editions received access to Qualcomm’s Innovation Commercialization Fund for reimbursing expenses incurred towards taking the product commercial (subject to applicable terms). Each previous edition of the Qualcomm Design in India Challenge has set a high benchmark for the next batch of innovators. So far, the program has incubated 89 deep-tech startups, leading to the launch of 28+ commercial products and 330+ patents protecting the startups’ own inventions in IoT and related technologies. The startups have raised over 235+ Mn USD in total funding, with 12 in Series A and 4 in Series B. Additionally, 7 successful exits have been made through M&As(merger and acquisition).
