Thermax Limited, a leading energy and environment solutions provider, and Fortescue Future Industries (FFI), an Australia-based green energy and green technology company, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore green hydrogen projects – including new manufacturing facilities – in India. Under the MoU, Thermax and FFI plan to explore opportunities to jointly develop fully integrated green hydrogen projects for commercial and industrial customers in India. The production of green hydrogen at an industrial scale would be a major step forward in decarbonising hard-to-abate industries in India, such as refineries, fertilisers and steel. The MoU between Thermax and FFI also contemplates the potential collaboration of the parties in the development of new manufacturing facilities to support green energy projects in India. The Performance Linked Incentive (PLI scheme), under India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission, could be leveraged for setting up any new manufacturing capacity. In addition to meeting the domestic requirements, electrolysers and subsystems could potentially be used for export internationally. Fortescue Metals Group’s experience in managing large-scale projects in its iron ore business provides FFI – Fortescue’s green energy arm – with a strong platform to expand into manufacturing projects in green hydrogen. FFI is in the process of constructing a world-leading Green Energy Manufacturing Centre in Gladstone, Queensland. The first phase of the project involves the construction of an electrolyser manufacturing facility, with a targeted initial output capacity of 2GW per annum. Thermax will bring its vast experience in EPC and supply chain to the collaboration. Expressing his thoughts on the collaboration, Ashish Bhandari, MD & CEO, Thermax, said, “The collaboration with Fortescue Future Industries is perfectly timed to leverage the massive potential of the Indian green energy market that presents a multitude of opportunities, backed by favourable policies and incentives. Furthermore, the recent approval of the National Green Hydrogen Mission by India’s Union Cabinet, which aims to increase domestic production of green hydrogen to 5 MMT per annum by 2030 and reduce fossil fuel imports by over Rs. 1 lakh crore, is a significant boost. With all these factors working in our favour, we are confident that our association will be successful.” FFI CEO Mark Hutchinson said, “FFI is on a mission to replace fossil fuels by producing green electrons from renewable energy and then converting these green electrons into green hydrogen. Through the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the Indian Government has shown that it is committed to developing its green hydrogen industry to help the country decarbonise. We are thrilled to be working with Thermax and believe that this MOU with a company of such high standing will help us in our mission to eliminate emissions.”
Tata 1mg pledges anemia tests for underprivileged women
An initiative launched to help every woman access quality healthcare GURUGRAM – Tata 1mg, India’s trusted healthcare platform, has pledged to conduct free anemia testing for underprivileged women. The pledge aims to bridge the gap in access to quality and timely healthcare for women and raise awareness around nutrition and other deficiencies that are prevalent in Indian women. As per a National Family Health Survey, 57% of women in India aged 15-49 years are anemic. An analysis of tests conducted at Tata 1mg Labs over the past three months shows that hemoglobin deficiency is prevalent across age groups and socio-economic strata in women. About 31% of 0-14-year-olds and 43% of >45 years also presented with incidences of anemia. Dr. Prashant Nag, Clinical Head, Tata 1mg Labs, explained: “Anemia is a condition in which the hemoglobin (Hb) concentration in the blood is lower than normal. Nutritional anemia occurs either due to a lack of dietary intake of certain nutrients or malabsorption. These nutrients are essential for the formation of Hb, a protein in the red blood cells, that carries oxygen to the various body cells. Common symptoms of anemia include fatigue, headaches, and weakness. It can be diagnosed by a simple blood test – CBC (Complete Blood Count).” With an aim to address this critical health issue faced by women in India, Tata 1mg has planned to facilitate free tests for women in need via a user generation contest under its “#NotJustAWomensDay” campaign. It focuses on raising awareness about women’s health issues year-round. It is a unique initiative that seeks to spark a conversation about women’s health issues while promoting education around them, all year round. Speaking about the initiative, Gaurav Agarwal, Co-Founder, Tata 1mg, said, “We believe that women’s health is a critical issue that needs more attention. Through the ‘NOT JUST A WOMEN’S DAY’ campaign, we hope to raise awareness about the health issues that women face every day and provide them with the resources they need to stay healthy. We encourage everyone to participate in this campaign and help us make a difference in the lives of women. For every pledge that we receive through this campaign and for every woman who books a CBC or nutritional anemia package on Tata 1mg Labs on women’s day, we commit to conducting one free anemia test for a woman in need.” As part of the campaign, Tata 1mg will also be creating educational handbooks to provide practical tips on topics related to a range of women’s health and wellness issues, including menstruation, breast cancer, mental health, and reproductive health.
Novo Nordisk India’s ’Break the Partnership’ campaign with Kapil Dev emphasizes the need for weight management in diabetes
At a prevalence rate of 7.7%, Karnataka ranks 6th in India in terms of diabetes prevalence. Prevalence numbers were higher at 32% in the high socioeconomic strata1, 2 In India, 67% of people with type 2 diabetes (PwD) also have obesity.3 The campaign aims to inform those with diabetes, their caregivers, and medical professionals on the significance of managing weight in type 2 diabetes. In collaboration with former Indian cricket team captain and fitness enthusiast Kapil Dev, Novo Nordisk, a leading global healthcare company in India, launched the “Break the Partnership” #WeightofDiabetes campaign, which aims to inform those with diabetes, their caregivers, and medical professionals about the important role that weight plays in type 2 diabetes (T2D). The campaign aims to increase awareness on recent treatment choices that manage body weight along with blood glucose in type 2 diabetes. Karnataka ranks 6th amongst states in India with highest diabetes prevalence at a rate of 7.7% and a prediabetes prevalence rate of 11.7%. Prevalence numbers are higher at 32% in the high socioeconomic strata.1,2 Obesity prevalence in the state stands at 30.1% and 30.9% in women and men respectively – a close to 7-percentage point increase over the past 5 years.4 It may be further noted that 67% of the people with type 2 diabetes in India also live with obesity3. The ADA/EASD (American Diabetes Association’s/European Association for Study of Diabetes) Consensus Report 20225 as well as guidelines from the Endocrine Society of India (ESI) emphasised weight management as a key component of holistic type 2 diabetes management6. Every one kilogram of weight loss can help lower HbA1c, and can also help reduce the risk of heart, renal, and bone illnesses, and improve patient health in multiple ways.7-12 Therefore, it is essential that people comprehend the significance of severing the link between diabetes and excess body weight by talking to their physician about novel medical treatments.3, 7-12 India accounts for one in seven people with diabetes worldwide, and over 6 lakh people in India die from the disease each year (second only to China).13 A person with diabetes who is overweight is more likely to develop several comorbid conditions, including certain cancers, bone problems, heart, kidney, and liver diseases, in addition to high blood pressure and high cholesterol.14-20 The multidimensional campaign aims to raise awareness among stakeholders on novel medical treatment options for weight management in type 2 diabetes. The Novo Nordisk team and its partners will engage healthcare professionals through awareness events and scientific symposia in several cities over the next few months. Targeted patient camps will help with diagnosis, consultation, and raising awareness of the issue. Announcing the launch of the campaign, veteran Indian cricketer and brand ambassador for Novo Nordisk India, Kapil Dev, said “I’m happy to support Novo Nordisk’s efforts to combat type 2 diabetes. The “Break the Partnership” #WeightofDiabetes campaign seeks to raise awareness about the dangerous link between diabetes and weight and why it should be broken with urgency. In cricket, a bowler is constantly trying to break the partnership between two batsmen as it can prove detrimental to his or her team. Similarly, the combination of diabetes and weight can harm people and it needs to be treated timely. It’s critical to eliminate potential complications before they become a problem for you. Today’s scientific developments enable successful type 2 diabetes treatment and aid in both blood sugar regulation as well as weight management. As a person living with type 2 diabetes, I am aware that diabetes can be effectively managed if we take the proper medicine and act quickly. Patients should discuss newer, more advanced type 2 diabetes treatment choices with their doctor. Addressing the audience at the event, Vikrant Shrotriya, Corporate Vice President and Managing Director, Novo Nordisk India, said, “Patient centricity is at the heart of all we do at Novo Nordisk. Diabetes and excess weight or obesity can coexist, yet therapeutic treatment frequently fails to effectively address this relationship. This combination may result in adverse consequences for people with type 2 diabetes.12-18 The landscape of type 2 diabetes management has changed over time to include medical therapies that focus on blood sugar control while also helping people lose weight. Our “Break the Partnership” #WeightofDiabetes campaign informs people about the effects of excess weight in diabetes, educates them to speak with their doctor on newer treatment options, and encourages them to manage not just blood sugar but also weight in diabetes to slow the onset and progression of comorbidities. We are hoping that the initiative will assist us in motivating resolute action among PwDs in the country.” Commenting on the launch of the campaign, Dr. Arpandev Bhattacharyya, Consultant, Department of Diabetes & Endocrinology, Manipal Hospital, Bangalore, said, “Rapid socioeconomic change in conjunction with urbanization, industrialization, population growth, sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits are some factors for the global increase in the diabetes epidemic.1 It is crucial to manage excess weight in T2D patients early on because it is directly linked to a higher risk of various catastrophic consequences. Weight management must be one of the main treatment goals for people with Type 2 diabetes.20 Unfortunately, weight gain is commonly encountered with the use of some frontline diabetes drugs. Patients losing >= 5% bodyweight had increased likelihood of 0.5% reduction in HbA1c which continued to decrease in patients losing more weight. Losing weight can reduce the risk of heart disease, kidney disease, and bone problems in those with diabetes and excess weight, according to studies. The fundamentals of T2D management have undergone significant alterations. Today’s T2D patients with obesity must think about newer medications that offer improved glycaemic control and significant weight loss while setting treatment goals21. For T2D patients who are overweight or obese, the “Break the Partnership #WeightofDiabetes effort will help pave the road for gradual and successful treatment. The thin-fat phenotype (body type), which is defined by ahigh body fat percentage but a relatively close to normal overall body weight, is frequently seen in Indians. A study found that 67% of type 2 diabetes patients also have obesity, with a median BMI of 25.6 kg/m2, which is much
This International Women’s Day, DKMS-BMST urges Young Women to register as potential lifesavers
In honor of International Women’s Day, DKMS BMST Foundation India, a non-profit organization dedicated to the fight against blood cancer and blood disorders, is calling on young women to register as potential stem cell donors. Stem cell donation from a healthy donor can help patients undergo a lifesaving stem cell transplantation. Deepika registered as a potential blood stem cell donor in August 2018 during one of the donor registrations drives at her workplace in order to help a person struggling with a life-threatening disease like Blood Cancer. Within just a year of registration she got a call of being a perfect match for a patient in need of a blood stem cell donor. On February 14th 2020, she donated her blood stem cells and gave someone a second chance at life. In India, the burden of life-threatening blood disorders is huge with an incidence of over 1 lakh new cases being diagnosed every year. However, blood cancer and blood disorders such as Thalassemia and Aplastic Anemia can be treated by a stem cell transplant. But, due to the lack of awareness about stem cell donation in India, it becomes difficult for patients to find matching donors. This is where DKMS-BMST comes into play, by registering more potential donors from India. Just like Deepika, 23-year-old pharmacology professional Dr Smita’s stem cell donation saved the life of a blood cancer patient in September 2021. Smita registered online with DKMS BMST Foundation India in January 2021 and within 9 months, she came as a match for a patient in need. “Being a donor is a life-changing experience. When I came to know that I was a potential match for someone, I knew I had to do everything in my power to help,” says Smita. “My family and friends were my biggest support system and they encouraged me throughout the process. I urge every young woman out there to take a step forward and register as a potential donor. You can save a life, and there is no better feeling than that.” Another donor, 24-year-old Basudha, registered as a blood stem cell donor in honor of her father who lost his life to lung cancer. One year after registering, she was informed that she was a suitable match for a blood cancer patient. She donated her blood stem cells through the Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Collection (PBSC) process. Reflecting on her experience, Basudha said, “It was a great feeling knowing I had done something that could potentially save a life. You never know if you or a loved one will be in the same situation someday, so always lend a helping hand when it’s possible.” “We are proud to celebrate International Women’s Day by highlighting the contribution of all the young women who have come forward to register as potential blood stem cell donors,” says Patrick Paul, CEO, DKMS BMST Foundation India. “These young women are role models for the entire nation, and their selfless act is an inspiration for others to follow. By registering as a donor, you are giving hope to patients and their families who are going through the hardest time of their lives. We encourage young women to take this step towards becoming a potential stem cell donor and join us in the fight against blood cancer.” “Stem cell donation is a crucial treatment option for patients with blood cancer and other blood disorders,” says Dr. Nitin Agarwal, HOD, Donor Request Management, DKMS-BMST. “Patients with blood cancer require healthy stem cells to replace the damaged cells in their bone marrow. Without a matching donor, these patients may not survive. It is important to remember that stem cell donation is a safe process and can save a life. By registering as a donor, young women can raise hope for patients waiting for a matching donor.” DKMS BMST Foundation India is working to support blood cancer and blood disorder patients by registering potential donors, raising awareness, and facilitating stem cell donations. So far, the foundation has registered over 80000 potential donors out of which over 20,000 are females and has facilitated 81 stem cell donations in India, since its inception in 2019. To become a stem cell donor, individuals need to be between the ages of 18 and 55 and in general good health. The registration process is simple, it involves filling out a form and providing a cheek swab sample. Only when a person is found to be a match for a patient, the actual donation process is done, in a safe and similar manner as a blood platelet donation. About DKMS BMST Foundation India: A non-profit organization dedicated to the fight against blood cancer and other blood disorders, such as thalassemia and aplastic anemia. Our aim is to improve the situation of patients suffering from blood cancer and other blood disorders in India and throughout the world, by raising awareness about blood stem cell transplantation and registering potential blood stem cell donors. By doing this DKMS-BMST provides patients in need of a blood stem cell transplant with a second chance at life. DKMS-BMST is a joint venture of two reputed non-profit organizations: BMST (Bangalore Medical Services Trust) and DKMS, one of the largest international blood stem cell donor centers in the world. This World Kidney Day know how to improve your kidney health
By Dr Karthiyayini Mahadevan, Head, Wellness and Wellbeing at Columbia Pacific Communitie Introduction Kidney plays an important role in eliminating waste products and conserving the essential and crucial substances for efficient functioning of the body. On an average, 180 litres of blood get filtered through the kidneys every day, of which only 1.5 litres get excreted as urine. Kidney is an extremely alert sense organ and ensures that the right substances are conserved, and the unwanted waste is excreted out of the body. Embryological viewpoint: Kidney is an organ which starts its journey and lays a trail starting from an area closer to neck, then down to the abdomen area and finally to the point where it is needed to be as its final form. Complex orchestrated interactions between various embryonic tissues, ensure the development of the kidney. Born out of these complexities, kidney works towards keeping the body in balance and works closely with the lungs in maintaining the body’s pH balance. Detoxification of kidneys Air conditioners require timely service of its filters to clear the clogging which happens over a period of time. Similarly, to have efficient kidneys and to avoid detoxification, one should follow the below tips: 1. Avoid processed foods and choose fresh fruits and vegetables. 2. Restrict salt intake and keep it to a limit of less than 2 gms. 3. Drink at least 2 litres of water everyday considering the local geographical weather conditions. 4. Maintain a healthy body weight. 5. Exercise regularly as per metabolic type. 6. Maintain normal blood pressure according to the age and BMI and ensure it is never above 140/90 mmHg. 7. Take measures to prevent diabetes. 8. Eat more plant-based food. 9. Detoxification should be considered to support the function of an agile kidney or if one has other co-morbidities such as diabetes, hypertension etc. 10. Healthy lifestyle is a must for this complex organ to function with agility. Diet for detoxification Plant based food which are kidney friendly should be included in the diet, such as papaya, apple, cranberries, blue berries, kale, spinach, sweet potato, pineapple, peaches, celery, radish, summer squash, barley. A kidney friendly diet will help protect the kidney from further damage. If there are underlying risk factors such as coexisting comorbidities, then one must limit some food items and fluids, so that the other fluids and minerals such as electrolytes do not build up in the body. Conclusion: Preparing for the unexpected and supporting the vulnerable is the major role of the kidney. Even if all the organs don’t function efficiently, but the kidney does, then there is a possibility of life sustenance. This organ needs to be supported as it supports the vulnerable. It helps in forming effective red blood cells and bone health through certain hormones such as erythropoietin and vitamin D. Approximately 1 of 3 adults with diabetes and 1 of 5 adults with high blood pressure may have a chronic kidney disease. Diabetes can also cause kidney diseases. Keeping blood sugar and blood pressure under control and switching to a healthy lifestyle will help live a better life. Choosing activities such as walking, swimming, bicycling, aerobics, dancing or any activity which involves movement of large muscle groups for longer period as part of daily routine will be beneficial. Limiting alcohol intake and quitting smoking also adds freshness to the kidneys. Mindfulness in all activities helps the kidney function well. Movement with awareness like yoga, tai-chi also helps in functioning of the kidney.

This special initiative is aimed at raising awareness about the various eye diseases and disorders that women are at a higher risk of developing, such as ocular manifestations of autoimmune diseases, dry eye, low vision, thyroid eye diseases, and refractive errors. Dr. Archana S, Regional Head- Clinical Services, Dr. Agarwals Eye Hospital, stated that “Biological sex differences affect ocular structure, gene expression, and other functions of the eye that influence eye health. Hence, it is important for women to undergo regular eye checkups to detect any eye disease or disorder at an early stage.” Dr. Archana S also added, “About 80% of those affected by autoimmune issues are women. Eye inflammation is one of the many possible effects of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, psoriasis, Reiter’s syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, and uveitis. Graves’ disease, an autoimmune disorder, which results in overproduction of the thyroid hormone affects more women than men. Thyroid eye diseases affect 16 in 100,000 women, while only 3 in the male population of equal size.” Dr. Agarwals Eye Hospital has made special arrangements for screening and diagnosing such eye diseases and disorders that women are more susceptible to. The hospital’s month-long awareness campaign aims to educate women about the risks of eye diseases that arise from factors exclusive to them, such as hormonal surges during pregnancy and menopause, and susceptibility to autoimmune diseases. Women can register for a free eye checkup by contacting 080-48193435. This is an excellent opportunity for women to take care of their eye health and receive expert advice from experienced eye care professionals.
Apollo partners with LifeSigns to donate 1000 remote patient monitoring patches to support Turkey after the disaster
The recent catastrophic disaster in Turkey has left tens of thousands of people dead and thousands more injured. While the rescue phase is complete, the recovery and rehabilitation phase is just beginning. Many hospitals have been demolished and are not functional, and doctors, nurses, and staff have been stretched thin. To support the country during this critical time, Apollo Hospitals and LifeSigns have partnered to donate 1000 remote patient monitoring patches. These patches can be used in settings where patients need close vital signs monitoring, including cardiac rhythm. They allow doctors to reliably monitor a patient’s heart rate, ECG rhythm, respiratory rate, temperature, and position, and can also be used to connect to oxygen saturation monitoring devices. This will free up critical care beds for the sickest patients, and those who need care outside of hospitals or in the field can use the patches. Timely monitoring of vital signs is essential to avoid further loss of life, especially when patients may not have access to their usual care and medications, and are dealing with immense stress from their losses. Dr Sai Praveen Haranath from Apollo Hospitals stated, “Apollo Hospitals stands ready to assist Turkey in this hour of need to help with medical assistance and guidance from our entire critical care and sub-specialist teams, who can help with monitoring these patients.” The Founder & Director of Life signs, Mr Hari Subramaniam, who donated the patches, understands the critical need for such a device, stating, “As a company, we have always believed that vital signs need to be monitored anywhere, anytime, and our devices allow doctors to make important decisions for their patients to prevent harm and encourage healing.” The Turkish Medical Association Central Council General Secretary Prof. Vedat Bulut Said, “We are thankful for humanitarian health aid and the solidarity of Apollo Hospital Group on behalf of the Turkish Medical Association. All efforts to help the earthquake victims are invaluable. Adana Medical Chamber is now the logistic centre in the disaster zone, and all medical supplies are distributed from Adana to other cities. In particular, four cities were damaged badly, and even the buildings of medical chambers collapsed in these cities.” Dr Selahattin Menteş, Radiation Oncology Specialist, and President of Adana Medical Chamber said “We thank you for the international solidarity shown in the earthquake that affected a total of 11 provinces, including 15 million people.” This whole endeavour was made possible through an international network of volunteers spanning many countries and required extreme coordination and cooperation from busy doctors in Turkey who were already dealing with multiple issues related to the crisis. We are hopeful that this donation of devices and expertise will help build a medical bridge between these two great countries and alleviate suffering. About Apollo Apollo revolutionized healthcare when Dr Prathap Reddy opened the first hospital in Chennai in 1983.
