Bayer organises a national conference to raise awareness on Nematodes among farmers
Bayer, a global enterprise with core competencies in the life science fields of agriculture and healthcare, recently organised the first-ever national conference on ‘Plant Parasitic Nematodes’ in Bengaluru. The conference was attended by distinguished industry leaders, representatives from Bayer and more than 70 eminent nematologists from across the country. Mr. Ravishankar Cherukuri, Vice President Marketing, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, Bayer CropScience Limited delivered the keynote address. The focus of the conference was on the status of nematode problems in crops, which was highlighted through the guest lectures from various experts. Among the prominent nematologists, Dr H.S. Gaur (Former Vice Chancellor, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel University of Agriculture & Technology, Modipuram, and Former Dean, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi), Dr P. Parvatha Reddy (Former Director, Indian Institute of Horticultural Research), and Dr D.J. Patel (Former Dean and Principal, Anand Agricultural University), participated in the conference. The annual national conference by Bayer is a step in the right direction to raise awareness among stakeholders about crop damaging Nematodes. Plant parasitic nematodes, like other insect pests and diseases, not only damage agriculture and horticulture crops but also accentuate diseases caused by fungal, bacterial and viral pathogens leading to “disease complexes”. During the conference, participants and Bayer representatives discussed ways such as joint ventures, to formulate tangible futuristic strategies for nematode management and bring benefits to the farming community. Speaking at the conference, Mr. Ravishankar Cherukuri, Vice President Marketing, India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, Bayer CropScience Limited said, “This conference is a first-of-its-kind for the industry where corporates and experts have come together to discuss these issues that directly impact our farmers and farming communities. We are excited to see long-term associations develop between various entities to address the need for Nematode awareness amongst farmers and solutions that benefit them.” Dr NG Ravichandra, Former Professor, Department of Plant Pathology, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru said “Integrated management with bioagents novel chemistry, traits along with cultural practices should ensure effective management of Nematodes in vegetables.” “Use of nematode-free planting material, soil less propagation, better fumigation methods and nursery certifications are important for managing Nematode problems in spices and condiments” added Dr S Eapen, Former Director, Indian Institute of Spice Research. Through a partnership between the corporate sector and academia, the conference attendees expressed hope that their technical expertise and resources can be utilised in the effective management of nematode diseases of crops.
Increased allocation to education budget in FY 2023-24 a positive trend
Marwadi University, the youngest institution to be recognized as a Centre of Excellence (CoE) by the Government of Gujarat, today shares budget reactions by leadership and HoD’s at the university. According to documents released by the Ministry of Finance, the education budget for FY 2023-24 has been increased by approximately 8.26% to INR 1,12,898.97 Cr, with allocation for HEI’s increased to INR 44,094.62 Cr. Increased allocation will only serve to the benefit of India which has the potential to capitalize on its growing demographic dividend. China is currently experiencing a shrinking workforce and ageing population, while according to a recent World Population Review (WPR) report India may have already surpassed China’s population, with half of India’s population under the age of 30. This only further cements the importance of grooming India’s youth and focusing on technological advancement, skilling and job creation in existing and upcoming sunrise sectors. Dr. Sandeep Sancheti, Provost Marwadi University , says that,” The ambitious fast-track launch of PM Kaushal Vikas Yojana 4.0 with Unified Skill India Digital Platform, covering skilling in courses such as AI, robotics, mechatronics, IoT, 3D printing, drone tech is a progressive step for future job creation and skilling. Stipend to support more than 47 lakh youth via a national apprenticeship scheme is also an interesting development and should have a positive impact. With the introduction of 5G hailed to disrupt the entire digital ecosystem and augment the Digital India Initiative, focus on developing 100 labs within engineering institutions to develop apps and create a support network for 5G services will certainly bear fruits with better connectivity and educational outcomes. Establishing 3 centres for AI, development of the National Digital Library for children, reviving National Book Trust, initiating 157 new nursing colleges, promoting research culture through R&D in pharma, and teacher’s training would take the nation further towards the development and access to knowledge resources and reduce the information divide. While the Budget 2023-24 increase is definitely a welcome step, a large chunk of the funds would be consumed by the inflationary trends along with a few new initiatives with impetus on enhancing research, skilling and tech integration. We are hopeful the positive trend of increased allocation continues and reaches the overall recommendation of 6% stated in the NEP as soon as possible.” Focusing on inclusivity, new sector development, R&D, Dr. R B Jadeja, Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology & Research, Marwadi University, says that, “Focus on boosting education of tribal students by recruiting 38,800 teachers and support staff for the Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) is an inclusive move will ultimately have an incredible expansion of the new younger minds. This budget also focuses on giving equivalent significance to the world of research by providing a research grant to one of the IITs for five years to encourage the indigenous production of lab-grown diamonds.” Commenting on India’s path to transforming into a knowledge- based economy, Dr. Sunil Jakhoria, Dean, Faculty of Management Studies, Marwadi University, adds that, “The thrust on teacher training and augmentation of educational resources through enhanced allocation to national digital library, national book trust and children book trust will contribute to a knowledge-based economy. The budget also provides a big relief to the middle class with a revision in income tax slabs. The announcements made in the budget will improve the ease of doing business and help the MSME sector. There is a clear focus on the agriculture sector with significant outlays, and a focus on urbanization and digitalization. Overall, Budget 2023 is balanced and progressive; one that gives primacy to inclusive growth.” Linking academia to startup innovation, focusing on industry academia connect, Dr. Amit Sata, Associate Dean, MUIIR Centre, Startup incubator of Marwadi University, adds that, “Various initiatives including setting up special accelerator fund to promote innovations in agricultural sectors, providing access to anonymised data for research by startup, introducing Digi Locker facilities for startups, encouraging research in the domain of pharmaceuticals, is a welcome step. Extension of period to one more year to form incorporations for getting benefits of tax exemption is highly encouraging, and will increase DPIIT registrations of startups drastically in this year. However, it also requires close observations that how many of existing as well as new startups will work in the direction of replacing imports of India especially in the domain of high valued segments related to aerospace, bio-medical, chips manufacturing, defense, etc. that is still on very high side, and slowing the overall growth of economy. It was highly anticipated that the union budget might provide special incentives for startups working to reduce imports by indigenous innovations, and in turn contributing to grow the economy of the nation.”

Budget reaction, Education Sector – Ratna Viswanathan, CEO, Reach to Teach
“As a run up to the budget I had put down what one expected off it with reference to the Education Sector. With the focus on FLN, NEP 2020 and NCF 2022, one hoped that the Budget would focus on taking this agenda forward in terms of infrastructure and manpower to create a strong framework to provide universal access to quality education. Recognising the learning losses suffered as a fall out of the pandemic, it is encouraging to see that this Budget has an increased budgetary allocation for school education by 8 percent. On the other hand, allocations for the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) which aims to improve the quality of school education with an emphasis on teacher training and strengthening of SCERTs and DIETs remains the same as in the previous year. The Budget identifies the need for teacher recruitment and intends to recruit 38,000 teachers over the next three years for the Eklavya Model Residential Schools. If the agenda of innovative pedagogy, capacity building, and establishment of centres of excellence at district level rolls out as envisaged, there will be a significant impact on teaching and learning outcomes. Nearly 3.5 lakh children study in the 740 Eklavya Model Residential Schools and this recruitment of teachers will strengthen education and development of tribal children. The establishment of a national digital library for children and adolescents to enable device-agnostic access to quality books in regional languages, was announced in 2018 and is being run by IIT Kharagpur. Setting up of physical libraries and creation of infrastructure for digital libraries, starting at the panchayat level, for children who may not have digital access is inclusive, forward looking and will create a culture of reading among children. The stated focus is on a knowledge based, technology driven economy. To get there we need to start from the lowest rung, which are schools. There is always a lot to be done but with the focus on integrating technology, creating reading access and strengthening schools for tribal children one hopes that there is greater equity in access to education, especially at the level of low resourced schools.”
Post Budget Quote from Ram Iyer, Founder and CEO, Vayana Network
Consistency is the key themeof Union Budget 2023 “The union budget of 2023 has been exceptionally consistent over the years in focus areas across Infrastructure, Agriculture, MSMEs and ease of doing business. The capital expenditure has been increased by 33% to a historic high of INR10 lakh crores, showing government’s commitment to creating jobs and stimulating expenditure resulting in a multiplier effect pegging GDP growth at 7%. Investments in development of public digital infrastructure for agriculture, facilitating data embassies in GIFT City, expanding the use of Digi Locker and setting up National Financial Information repository signal towards the continued focus on digitisation and broadening its access to the public. Revamped Credit Guarantee Scheme for MSMEs is a significant move to support MSMEs’ who have been battered by Covid related disruptions, the infusion of Rs 9000 crore into the corpus would undoubtedly benefit small business owners. Concrete actionables towards ease of doing business in the form of PAN being a single identifier, reducing compliances and decriminalizing provisions are legislative steps ensuring ease of doing business. Overall, it is a promising budget that continues to build on the groundwork laid during the previous budgets.”
Kindly attribute the quote to Rahul Shah, Co-Founder & Director, WalkWater Talent Advisors
“The budget brings back the Government of India’s focus on the common man, the farmer and the MSMEs which are important sections of the society. This combined with the increased trust on infrastructure (highest ever spend) and the government’s atma nirbhartha focus gives a signal that India will continue to be the fastest growing economy in the world and the government will continue to spend and put its monies where it matters. No doubt, this is a progressive and balanced budget. From an industry point of view, what is heartening to note is the continued focus on infrastructure (roads, ports, railways), Manufacturing along with increasing focus on renewable energy and the green hydrogen economy. This along with more money in the hands of the farmer and common man, will lead to the continued growth of the India consumption story. From a leadership hiring point of view, India Inc will continue its focus on growth and capex, and this will mean renewed demand for CXO and CXO minus 1 talent. The sectors that will continue to see demand for leadership talent will be Consumer, Manufacturing, Energy, Pharmaceuticals and BFSI. “
Union Budget 2023 Recommends a Greater Emphasis on Artificial Intelligence Research!
“It is exciting to see that the Union Budget 2023 recommends a greater emphasis on artificial intelligence research, as well as employability, e-skilling, and job creation in the startup sector. With India currently having the third largest ecosystem for start-ups in the world and ranking second in innovation quality among middle-income nations, it is encouraging to see the implementation of innovative policies and initiatives to support the growth of startups and frontier technologies in the country. The proposed three Centers of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence to realize the vision of Make AI (Artificial Intelligence) in India and Make AI Work for India aimed at developing the country’s AI ecosystem is a decisive step towards promoting AI and allied technologies in India. Additionally, the launch of the National Data Governance Policy to enable access to anonymized data will be instrumental in unleashing innovation and research by startups and academia. As stated during the budget, this initial step in catalyzing the era of digital government will also offer greater opportunity for better, more informed decision-making while adhering to the highest data protection standards and dedication to data privacy. Given the emphasis on research, entrepreneurship, and startups, it is certain that startups will play an important role in job creation, providing employment, and innovations. The Union Budget will unleash our nation and economy full potential. Furthermore, implementing policies that aid in boosting private sector involvement in frontier technology and artificial intelligence (AI), as well as focusing on the academic and skilling environment, would undoubtedly attract and grow highly trained digital talent in the country. We applaud the government planned tax holiday for start-ups; this is an excellent move for improving the country start-up ecosystem. This growth-focused budget considers all variables and challenges, and we congratulate Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman for presenting a budget that addresses all issues and puts India on a higher growth trajectory.”

Annual gold demand soars to a new decade high in 2022
The World Gold Council’s latest Gold Demand Trends report reveals that annual gold demand (excluding OTC) in 2022 increased by 18% year-on-year, hitting 4,741t – the highest annual total since 2011. Boosted by a record fourth quarter, demand for gold was propelled by hefty central bank-buying and persistently strong retail investment. Annual central bank demand more than doubled to 1,136t in 2022, up from 450t the year before and to a new 55-year record high. Purchases in Q4 2022 alone reached 417t, bringing the total for the second half of 2022 to more than 800t. Investment demand (excluding OTC) in 2022 was up 10% on the previous year. The increase was the result of two factors: a notable slowdown in ETF outflows and strong gold bar and coin demand. Gold bars and coins continued to hold favour with investors in several countries around the world, which helped to offset weakness in China. Total European gold bar and coin investment for 2022 surpassed 300t, aided by persistently robust German demand. There was also significant growth in the Middle East, where annual demand increased by 42% year-on-year. Jewellery demand softened slightly in 2022, down 3% at 2,086t. This weakness was largely driven by the marked drop in Chinese annual jewellery demand, down 15% as consumer activity was curtailed by ongoing COVID-19 lockdowns for most of the year. The gold price rally in Q4 also contributed to the annual decline in jewellery demand. Total annual supply in 2022 continued its gentle upwards trajectory, up by 2% y-o-y to 4,755t and remaining above pre-pandemic levels. In particular, mine production increased to 3,612t – a four year high. Louise Street, Senior Markets Analyst from the World Gold Council, commented: “Last year we saw the highest level of annual gold demand in over a decade, driven in part by colossal central bank demand for the safe haven asset. Gold’s diverse demand drivers played a balancing act as rising interest rates prompted some tactical ETF outflows, while elevated inflation spurred on gold bar and coin investment. In the end, overall investment demand was up 10% on the previous year. “Turning to 2023, economic forecasts are pointing to a challenging environment and a likely global recession which could lead to a role reversal in gold investment trends. If inflation comes down, this could be a headwind for gold bar and coin investment. Conversely, continued weakening of the US dollar and the moderating pace of interest rate hikes could have positive implications for gold-backed ETF demand. We will likely see jewellery consumption remain resilient, bolstered by a release of pent-up demand as China re-opens; but possibly dragged down by the squeeze on consumer spending if there is a more severe downturn. While there are several possible outcomes, gold has a precedent for performing well in turbulent economic times, highlighting its value as a long-term, strategic asset.” The Gold Demand Trends Q4 and FY 2022 report, which includes comprehensive data provided by Metals Focus, can be viewed here.
